It was a late Sunday night, I was buckling down the hatches in my home and preparing for bed when I heard a soft saxophone melody begin rolling over the hills. Like a sweet siren song it drew me nearer, I leaned out of the window closest to the music, all in hopes to hear more of the buttery smooth sound of this tantalizing instrument. Sitting by the window still in my pajamas with an ear cupped to amplify the sounds, the saxophone sounds begin to fade, and so does my curiosity, I turn my head back towards my bed with gratitude to whoever granted me a little piece of music as a lullaby.
When all of a sudden the hills erupt with drums, guitars, brass , singing and the blast of soca music hit me all at once. At this point I realized it was no lullaby; instead, a warning before the alarm clock, bedtime would have to wait until tomorrow and I was ready to go to the fete.
I drove over the hill into the small town of Calliaqua to see lights swaying in the distance making no mistake that this was were I was headed, I moved closer towards it to see, food trucks that lined the street and people as they walked through, all facing towards the music smiling and dancing a little dance on the road. Once I arrived at the gate, I expected to pay the entry fee into the session but I quickly learned the gates were open for all to enter. If you were inside you would feel that the music is one thing, but having felt the vibe of the crowd was another. The crowd was made purely from people who loved the music, anyone that came by the stage or into dance floor waved their hands and heads as they all sang along with the catchy soca choruses and praised the artists as they came on and off stage.
The performers all had their own style and message in their sound. The band members and back up singers perform each song all together for each artist showing a truly synergies performance that couldn’t be achieved otherwise. All the momentum being put out from the lyrics and the movements on stage from the artists were reflected by the dedicated but small crowd who were there to support the motions of music.
They will be having another event this coming Thursday night 8th of June 2017, admission free as always. Somewhere Near Russels Cinema in town, I'm not sure exactly where but just follow the music if you can, not asking you in their favour but in yours to witness something truly special.
